Card Text: In 1853 the Government acquired the strip of land located I the middle of the square, between 10th and 11th Streets, and erected a Post Office Building. During the Civil War this was used as a Treasury Building by the U.S. Government, and it was therein that President Jefferson Davis was indicted for high treason. Later the property adjoining the old Post Office Building on the West was acquired, and in 1910 the erection of the present new Post Office, costing about one million dollars, was commenced, the corner-stone being laid Dec. 17th, 1910.

The building was used by the Confederate government during the civil war, not the U.S. government. The first floor housed the Confederate government's Treasury Department. The third floor was President Davis' office; 1000 block of East Main Street; Beautiful and Historical Richmond, Va. Series No. 45D;
