Card Text: This eminent statesman, during his long and useful life, filled practically every office within the gift of the people of his native State, having been, successfully a member of the State Legislature, Member of Congress (1816-25), Governor of Virginia, and U.S. Senator. Was elected (V.P.U.S. in 'Tippecanoe and Tyler too' campaign, and became 10th president U.S. upon the death of Gen. Harrison in 1841. The most important act of his administration was the annexation of Texas in 1845. He died in Richmond, at the age of 72, while a member of the Confederate State Congress.
