Card Text: This stately old mansion owes its fame to the fact that it was the former home of Miss Van Lew, a Union Sympathizer during the Civil War. She frequently found means of conveying secret information to the Federal armies investing Richmond, and harbored for a time the 19 prisoners who escaped from Libby Prison. After the war she was appointed Post-Mistress of Richmond by Gen'l Grant, then president of the U.S. The building is now used as private hospital. 2300 block of East Grace Street; Beautiful and Historical Richmond, Va. Series No. 17-D A-5942; Postmarked: Not postmarked. |
