Transcription: Near Petersburg Oct[ober] 14th 1864 L[evin] S[mith] Joynes M.D. Richmond Va. Dear Sir On the 11th inst[ant] I forwarded you my application to Surg[eon] Gen[era]l to be trans- fered to Richmond so that I might be able to attend your med[ical] school. If you have not presented it to the Surg[eon] Gen[era]l please return it: unless you think my chance is very good in obtaining it. But if you have will you be so kind as to inform me the result of his endorsement. Anxiously awaiting your reply. I am Dr. Very Respectfully Jos[eph] H. McCormick Hosp[ital] Stew[ar]d 48th G[eorgi]a Reg[imen]t [Marginal Note:] address 48th Ga Reg[imen]t Wright's Brig[ade] A[rmy] [of] N[orthern]. Va Jos[eph] H.
