Transcription: Medical College of Va May 10th 1860 To the Faculty of Va: Med[ical] College Gentlemen We the undersigned have this morning heard of a new regulation made by yourselves at your last meeting to the effect "That all "alcoholic [underscore] Liquors [underscore]," shall here after be kept locked up by the Janitor, and given out only [underscore] on the exhibition of a written [underscore] order, [underscore] signed by the attending Physician or Surgeon" and while we are well aware, that we have no right to interfere with any [underscore] rule [underscore] made by the Faculty, for the government of this Institution; yet we are entirely unable to construe the [underscore] late [underscore] action, [underscore] in any other light, than that is intended to cast a reflection upon our deportment, during the short-time we have been here: and we therefore ask most respectfully that you will at your earliest Convenience, give us an Explanation. The articles above alluded to as we are informed, have always heretofore been kept in the apothocary, and we can see no reason why they should be removed & locked up, to be dealt out by the Janitor, [underscored] any more than any other medicine used in the Infirmary: unless it be that you think said articles have been willfully [underscore] used [underscore] and wasted [underscore] either by ourselves or our friends. With this view of the "New Regulation, then Gentlemen: we consider it our [underscore] duty [underscore] to take some notice of it, and sincerely hope that no one will misconstrue our motive. By complying with this request you will greatly oblige. Yours very Respectfully "Resident Students" [underscore] P.S. We have heard the views of Two Members of The Faculty in regard to this matter: but in order that things should be made plain & satisfactory we have concluded to send this note: As the act was not one of individual [underscore] Members, but {of} the whole Faculty [underscore] Yours etc. R.S. |
