This collection includes student publications from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), as well as its predecessors, Richmond Professional Institute (RPI) and the Medical College of Virginia (MCV). Student publications include newspapers, newsletters, magazines, and other materials primarily created, edited, and published by current students. While some publications are official publications of the university, others were started as alternative grassroots publications which gained university funding, and some remain independently published.
Yearbooks are not included in this collection, and can be found here.
Publications in this collection include:
- The Atlas, the first student newspaper published on the Monroe Park campus by Richmond School of Social Work and Public Health, a Division of the College of William and Mary, from 1929-1939. It was succeeded by Proscript.
- Proscript, the student newspaper for the newly formed Richmond Professional Institute, published from 1939 to 1968. It was succeeded by Commonwealth Times when RPI and MCV combined to form VCU in 1968.
- Commonwealth Times, the independent student newspaper of Virginia Commonwealth University, which began publishing in 1969 and continues to publish today.
- Fan Free Funnies, three issues of an all-comics black-and-white tabloid published in 1973 as a companion to Commonwealth Times.
- Reflections in Ink, an alternative newspaper began through collaboration of the Black Student Alliance and the VCU student branch of the League of Black Journalists, that published from 1978 to 1993 before changing its name to The Vine.
- The Vine, successor to Reflections in Ink, published from 1994 to 2008, and transitioned from a mostly African American student perspective to a multi-cultural one.
Student Newspapers and supplemental materials
- Ink, the successor to The Vine, is “devoted to the goals of diversity and multiculturalism that VCU itself embodies." It began publication in 2008, and continues under the VCU Student Media Center.
- Millenium, a literary and arts magazine published from 1997-2005.
- Pwatem (previously called Poictesme), an anthology of literature and art from undergraduate students, which began publishing in 2006 and continues today.
- Rabble, a companion chapbook to Pwatem, publishing since 2014.
- Emanata, a comics anthology published annually since 2014.
- Amendment, a "progressive literature and art journal" publishing annually since 2004.
