Card Text: The 'Blues' is one of the oldest and most widely known military organizations in the U.S., and election to membership in one of its Companies is a highly prized honor. Was organized May 10, 1789, and except during 'Reconstruction Days' - when it was prohibited from so doing - has borne arms in peace and in war. Was mustered into service of the Confederate States in June 1861; served with distinction throughout that conflict, and, with a 'remnant of the 16' survivors surrendered at Appomattox. Their splendid new armory, erected at a cost of $150,000 by the City of Richmond, was dedicated on the 121st anniversary of their organization with elaborate ceremonies, in which the Governors of Rhode Island, Conn. and Va., with their Staffs, escort, etc. participated. The armory contains a spacious drill room, handsomely furnished and equipped Company rooms, rifle range, gymnasium, etc. Beautiful and Historical Richmond, Va. Series No.89; Postmarked: 1915 |
