Transcription: Georgetown S.C. May 31st 1863 L.S. Joynes M.D. Doctor: I noticed in the "Richmond Enquirer" that an election for Demonstrator of Anatomy in the "Richmond Medical College will come off on Saturday the Sixth of June. The position is one that I have long wanted, not so much for the sake of the position, but that I might advance in the Profession of which I have the honor to be a member. I am now in the army, have been since the 26th of Dec 1860 and to prove to you that I do not want the position to get out of my country's service I will mention that I have been wounded six times and taken prisoner once on the Soil of the "Old Dominion". And one the wounds put out my right eye. I would be proud to get the position of Demonstrator in your College as I could then pursue the Studies thus have been the subject of my thoughts, for years. I am a graduate of one of the best colleges on this continent and could give ample reference if necessary Elihu Toland [underscored] Surgeon Con Forces West of Virginia Bay Georgetown S.C. [Addressed] Elihu Toland Surgeon etc. Georgetown S.C. May 31 1863 Application for post of Demonstrator of Anatomy. |
