Transcription: Field Infirmary Thomas Brigade Petersburg Va 7th Oct 1864 L[evin] S[smith] Joynes MD Dean etc. Dear Sir. Thanking you for the services already rendered and promised. I forward my application according to your directions which you will please present to the Surg[eon] Gen[era]l. I desire the transfer to attend Lectures; if this priviledge can not be granted, please withdraw the application. There is no Medical officer in my Reg[imen]t which fact explains why Reg[imen]t Surgeon's name does not appear on endorsment. Respectfully yours W[illiam] G. Roberts S[tewa]rd 35th Ga.
